L.Y. Cairns School in Edmonton is an elementary and secondary school focused on supporting students with special needs. We worked closely with the school community to help create an inclusive park that creates play for students of all ages. As one parent at the school said:
We often don’t think of the need for outdoor fun once kids get to junior high and high school, yet it is something that everyone no matter what age you are can benefit from. With this in mind we wanted to create a space for students at L.Y. Cairns and the community to be able to spend time outdoors and be active. Together with a wonderful group of people we achieved a mature, functional and most importantly an accessible fitness circuit for people of all abilities to enjoy.
"Really it’s more of a workout park, but unusual options make the playground at LY Cairns School one we loved and had a lot of fun at! Highlights for us included dual monkey bars (the taller set is high – even for me!), the series of cable platforms, and the great variety of climbers, balance equipment and gymnastics bars. The entire playground is based in rubber, and sits adjacent to a basketball court, with picnic tables in between."
